Proverbs 1
- 1The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel.
- 2To know wisdom and instruction, and to understand words of insight.
- 3To receive instruction in wise conduct, justice, judgment, and equity.
- 4To give good sense to the inexperienced, and knowledge and discretion to the young man.
- 5A wise man will listen and learn more, and a man of understanding will gain wise counsel:
- 6To understand a proverb and its meaning, the words of the wise and their riddles.
- 7The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
- 8My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not abandon your mother's teaching:
- 9For they shall be an ornament of grace to your head, and chains about your neck.
- 10My son, if sinners entice you, do not agree to go with them.
- 11If they say, Come with us. Let us lie in wait to shed blood. Let us secretly ambush the innocent without cause:
- 12Let us swallow them up alive as the grave. Whole, as those that go down into the pit:
- 13We shall find all kinds of precious goods, and fill our houses with plunder:
- 14Join your lot with ours, let us all share one purse:
- 15My son, do not walk in their way. Keep your feet off their path:
- 16For their feet run to evil, and hurry to shed blood.
- 17Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
- 18But they lie in wait for their own blood. They ambush their own lives.
- 19So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain. Such gain takes away the life of its owners.
- 20Wisdom calls out in the open, she raises her voice in the streets:
- 21She cries at the head of the noisy streets, in the openings of the gates: in the city she speaks her words, saying,
- 22How long will you inexperienced people love your lack of wisdom? How long will mockers delight in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
- 23Turn at my correction. I will pour out my spirit to you, I will make known my words to you.
- 24Because I have called, and you refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded,
- 25But you dismissed all my counsel and wanted none of my correction:
- 26I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when your fear comes,
- 27When what you fear comes like devastation, and your destruction comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
- 28Then they shall call on me, but I will not answer. They shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
- 29Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord:
- 30They wanted none of my counsel, they despised all my correction.
- 31Therefore they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
- 32For the turning away of the inexperienced shall kill them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
- 33But whoever listens to me shall live safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
