Philemon 1
- 1Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellow laborer.
- 2And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house.
- 3Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 4I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers,
- 5Hearing of your love and faith, which you have toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints.
- 6That your fellowship in the faith may become effective by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
- 7For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints are refreshed by you, brother.
- 8Therefore, although in Christ I have great boldness to command you to do what is proper,
- 9Yet for love's sake I rather beg you, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
- 10I urge you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains.
- 11He was once unprofitable to you, but now he is profitable both to you and to me.
- 12I have sent him back. Receive him, then, as my own heart.
- 13I wanted to keep him with me so that, in your place, he might serve me while I am imprisoned for the gospel.
- 14But I wanted to do nothing without your consent, so that your good deed would be willing, not forced.
- 15For perhaps he was separated from you for a while, that you should receive him forever.
- 16Not now as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
- 17So if you count me as a partner, receive him as you would receive me.
- 18If he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge it to my account.
- 19I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it. I need not mention that you owe me your very self as well.
- 20Yes, brother, let me have joy of you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in the Lord.
- 21Having confidence in your obedience I wrote to you, knowing that you will also do more than I say.
- 22Also prepare a place for me to stay, for I trust that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
- 23Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you.
- 24Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers.
- 25The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Philemon 1 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVPaul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,
GIGAKJVPaul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellow laborer.
KJVAnd to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:
GIGAKJVAnd to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house.
KJVI thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,
GIGAKJVI thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers,
KJVHearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;
GIGAKJVHearing of your love and faith, which you have toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints.
KJVThat the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
GIGAKJVThat your fellowship in the faith may become effective by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.
KJVFor we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.
GIGAKJVFor we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints are refreshed by you, brother.
KJVWherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,
GIGAKJVTherefore, although in Christ I have great boldness to command you to do what is proper,
KJVYet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
GIGAKJVYet for love's sake I rather beg you, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.
KJVI beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:
GIGAKJVI urge you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains.
KJVWhich in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:
GIGAKJVHe was once unprofitable to you, but now he is profitable both to you and to me.
KJVWhom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:
GIGAKJVI have sent him back. Receive him, then, as my own heart.
KJVWhom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:
GIGAKJVI wanted to keep him with me so that, in your place, he might serve me while I am imprisoned for the gospel.
KJVBut without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.
GIGAKJVBut I wanted to do nothing without your consent, so that your good deed would be willing, not forced.
KJVFor perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;
GIGAKJVFor perhaps he was separated from you for a while, that you should receive him forever.
KJVNot now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
GIGAKJVNot now as a slave, but more than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?
KJVIf thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.
GIGAKJVSo if you count me as a partner, receive him as you would receive me.
KJVIf he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;
GIGAKJVIf he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge it to my account.
KJVI Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.
GIGAKJVI, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it. I need not mention that you owe me your very self as well.
KJVYea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.
GIGAKJVYes, brother, let me have joy of you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in the Lord.
KJVHaving confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.
GIGAKJVHaving confidence in your obedience I wrote to you, knowing that you will also do more than I say.
KJVBut withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
GIGAKJVAlso prepare a place for me to stay, for I trust that through your prayers I will be restored to you.
KJVThere salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus;
GIGAKJVEpaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you.
KJVMarcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.
GIGAKJVMark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers.
