Acts 1
- 1Theophilus, I wrote the first account of all that Jesus began to do and to teach.
- 2It ran until the day he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.
- 3After his suffering, he also showed them that he was alive, giving many convincing proofs. He appeared to them over forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
- 4While he was gathered with them, he commanded them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for the Father's promise. You have heard about it from me, he said.
- 5For John truly baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit in a few days.
- 6So when they had come together, they asked him, Lord, will you restore the kingdom to Israel at this time?
- 7And he said to them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons. The Father has set those in his own authority.
- 8But you will receive power after the Holy Spirit has come on you. And you will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the farthest part of the earth.
- 9And when he had spoken these things, while they watched, he was taken up. A cloud received him out of their sight.
- 10And while they looked steadily toward heaven as he went up, two men stood by them in white clothing.
- 11They also said, You men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.
- 12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
- 13When they had come in, they went up to an upper room, where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
- 14These all continued with one accord in prayer and pleading, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
- 15In those days Peter stood up among the disciples. The number of names together was about a hundred and twenty. He said,
- 16Brothers, this scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to those who took Jesus.
- 17For he was numbered with us, and had received a share in this ministry.
- 18Now this man bought a field with the reward of his evil. Falling headlong, he burst open in the middle, and all his insides gushed out.
- 19And it became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so that field is called in their own language Aceldama, that is, The field of blood.
- 20For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his home be empty, and let no one live in it. And let another take his office.
- 21So of these men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
- 22Beginning from the baptism of John to the day he was taken up from us, one must be chosen to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
- 23And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.
- 24And they prayed, and said, You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which of these two you have chosen,
- 25That he may take this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas turned away, that he might go to his own place.
- 26And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of Acts 1 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
