3 John 1
- 1The elder to the beloved Gaius, who I love in the truth.
- 2Beloved, I wish that you may prosper in every way and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.
- 3For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers and sisters came and testified to the truth in you, just as you live by the truth.
- 4I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
- 5Beloved, you act faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters and for strangers.
- 6They have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to help them on their journey in a way worthy of God,
- 7because they went out for his name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
- 8We therefore ought to welcome people like these, so that we may work together for the truth.
- 9I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not receive us.
- 10Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious words against us. Not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers and sisters, stops those who want to, and throws them out of the church.
- 11Beloved, do not imitate evil, but good. Whoever does good is of God. Whoever does evil has not seen God.
- 12Everyone speaks well of Demetrius, and the truth itself speaks for him. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.
- 13I had many things to write, but I do not want to write to you with ink and pen.
- 14But I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face. Peace be to you. Our friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
What changed from the KJV
GIGAKJV is a modern English revision of the King James Version. The comparison below uses the project's KJV text in the later 1769 tradition and marks, word by word, each verse of 3 John 1 where the wording differs: struck-through words are the KJV's, highlighted words are GIGAKJV's.
KJVThe elder unto the wellbeloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
GIGAKJVThe elder to the beloved Gaius, who I love in the truth.
KJVBeloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
GIGAKJVBeloved, I wish that you may prosper in every way and be healthy, even as your soul prospers.
KJVFor I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth.
GIGAKJVFor I rejoiced greatly when the brothers and sisters came and testified to the truth in you, just as you live by the truth.
KJVBeloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;
GIGAKJVBeloved, you act faithfully in whatever you do for the brothers and sisters and for strangers.
KJVWhich have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
GIGAKJVThey have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to help them on their journey in a way worthy of God,
KJVBecause that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
GIGAKJVbecause they went out for his name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
KJVWe therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
GIGAKJVWe therefore ought to welcome people like these, so that we may work together for the truth.
KJVI wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
GIGAKJVI wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not receive us.
KJVWherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
GIGAKJVTherefore, if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious words against us. Not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers and sisters, stops those who want to, and throws them out of the church.
KJVBeloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
GIGAKJVBeloved, do not imitate evil, but good. Whoever does good is of God. Whoever does evil has not seen God.
KJVDemetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.
GIGAKJVEveryone speaks well of Demetrius, and the truth itself speaks for him. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true.
KJVI had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:
GIGAKJVI had many things to write, but I do not want to write to you with ink and pen.
KJVBut I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.
GIGAKJVBut I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face. Peace be to you. Our friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
